Dunkeld & Birnam lies close to one of the treasures of Scottish golf, Blairgowrie's famous Rosemount course, where Greg Norman won his first European Tour event in 1977. Alongside Rosemount, the newer Lansdowne Course designed by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas offers a more modern layout with tighter fairways to challenge visiting golfers.

A little further east from Blairgowrie, the area around Alyth is blessed with three courses all within 'driving' distance of each other - Glenisla, Strathmore and the original 1894 Course at Alyth which is characterised by rollercoaster greens and long established pine and beech trees.

If you enjoy a city break golfing experience then from Perth you can pick from five courses. On the outskirts lie Murrayshall and its sister, Lynedoch. In the city itself, the undulating hills and panoramic views from Craigie Hill contrast with the flatter but no less challenging municipal North Inch Golf Course and King James VI - one of only two courses in the world built on an island.

West of Perth there is a cluster of courses. The holiday town of Crieff is home to two, the Ferntower Course at Crieff Golf Club which affords magnificent views over the Strathearn Valley and the Culcrieff Course at Crieff Hydro. Close by Gleneagles Hotel is the only place in Scotland that can boast three Championship golf courses - the King's, the Queen's and the PGA Centenary which hosts the Johnnie Walker Championship and in 2014, the Ryder Cup. Also in the area are courses at Auchterarder and Whitemoss.

On the southern boundaries of Perthshire lie Muckhart Golf Club and two great golf courses in Kinross, the demanding Montgomery Course and the Bruce. While no less challenging, the Bruce provides an enjoyable and stimulating round of golf, whether you are a holiday golfer or low handicap player.

Six of Perthshire's prodigious courses - Alyth, Blairgowrie Rosemount, Crieff Ferntower, Taymouth Castle and the superb Gleneagles King's and Queen's Courses - were originally created by the late, great James Braid, five times Open champion and can be enjoyed today as part of the James Braid Golf Trails.

Often historically the focal point of village life, Perthshire's 9-hole courses have a charm of their own and provide excellent challenges set amidst magnificent scenery where you are guaranteed a warm and friendly welcome. The most northerly is the Spittal of Glenshee. In the highland Perthshire area around Pitlochry you can find Blair Atholl and Strathtay, while Loch Tay has a 9-hole course at either end - Kenmore and Killin. Founded in 1911, Killin boasts one of the most scenic closing holes in Scotland.

In the east there are two 9-hole courses which both sit alongside 18-hole counterparts, at Alyth the Strathmore Letfie Links and at Blairgowrie the Wee Course offer a more relaxed alternative suitable for all ages and abilities.

West of Perth, Crieff and its surroundings offer up a real focal point for 9-hole golf in Perthshire. In addition to the Crieff Dornock, Comrie, Muthill and the Willie Auchterlonie designed St Fillans Golf Course, which enjoys a lovely situation at the eastern end of Loch Earn all offer an excellent golfing challenge. A mile or two up the Sma' Glen from Crieff on the Perthshire Tourist Route is the 9-hole Par 3 Foulford Course.

In southern Perthshire the complex at Gleneagles boasts a 'wee course' and close by there is a 9-hole course at Dunning. Completing the array of courses in Perthshire are Milnathort and Kinnesswood by Kinross.
